Babangida Reveals Why Military Stages Coup In African Countries

Firstly, he pointed out that when electoral malpractice, voter apathy, mass rigging, and thuggery become prevalent during elections, it can lead to frustration in society and cause the masses to lose faith in their country's leadership. This atmosphere of discontent may create an opportunity for the military to step in and take control.

Secondly, Gen. Babagida talked about the desperation of politicians who are willing to resort to any means, including rigged elections, to gain power. When the democratic process is undermined, and elected leaders do not represent the will of the people, it can fuel an environment of anarchy, which may prompt the military to consider intervening to restore order.

The former military head also stressed the importance of a legitimate judiciary in preserving a nation's integrity and instilling hope in the masses within a democratic institution. However, he expressed concern about the possibility of corruption within the judiciary, where justice is manipulated to favor certain political candidates, leading to what he termed "justice in impunity." If both politicians and the judiciary are corrupt, it raises doubts about who can protect democracy and ensure justice is served. In essence, Gen. Babagida's viewpoint highlights the interconnectedness of political instability and the erosion of democratic principles. 

When elections are marred by malpractice, and the judiciary fails to uphold its duty impartially, it can create an environment ripe for military intervention.
