On June 14, 2023, the President suspended Abdulrasheed Bawa as the head of the anti-graft agency for an extended period. The meeting on Wednesday took place around four weeks later.
Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, stated that Bawa's suspension was "to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office." The move was taken in response to "weighty" claims of office abuse made against him.
Bawa was instructed to turn over control of his office's business to the Director of Operations in the Commission right away.
The Department of State Services (DSS) then detained Bawa and questioned him.
Chukkol, who was the Commission's Director of Operations, took over as interim chair of the EFCC right away.
Chukkol, a founding member of the Commission, is a skilled investigator with expertise in cybercrime and money laundering.
