Rising from a strategic meeting held at Ibro Hotel, Abuja, the Okehi Elders Council, led by Engr. Philip Onukaba, reaffirmed its commitment to equity, fairness, and power rotation within Kogi Central Senatorial District. The council maintained that, in the interest of justice and political stability, the senatorial seat should remain within Old Okehi, precisely Okehi Local Government Area.
The elders declared their readiness to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) morally, financially, and physically—provided the party presents Chief Momoh Yusuf Obaro as its senatorial candidate. According to the council, Chief Obaro’s entry into the race has rekindled confidence in the party, drawing back many supporters who had earlier drifted away due to perceived marginalization.
The council warned against the historical mistake of concentrating political power and key positions within one local government area, recalling that similar strategies during the NPN and UPN era did not guarantee electoral victory but instead deepened internal divisions. The elders emphasized that inclusive politics remains the strongest pathway to victory in Kogi Central.
While acknowledging that Okene has benefited significantly from previous and current administrations, the council expressed concern over the long-standing concentration of appointments, noting that one individual has occupied a commissioner position for nearly 8 to 9 years without replacement. The elders described this as an unhealthy political cabal that undermines fairness and unity and called for its correction in the spirit of equity.
The Okehi Elders Council stated clearly that it is prepared to support any senatorial candidate from Okehi Local Government Area. However, the council also made it known that continued sidelining of Okehi in the senatorial race may lead to a withdrawal of support in other elections, as communities can only mobilize wholeheartedly when they feel represented.
Finally, the elders called on all sons and daughters of Okehi, both at home and in the diaspora, to urgently obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and encourage eligible youths to register, stressing that political relevance is secured through active participation in the democratic process.
The council appealed to party leaders and stakeholders across Kogi Central to embrace justice, inclusion, and unity as the surest path to victory in 2027.
