REPORT
Capacity Building Training on Grievance Redress
Mechanism (GRM) and School Improvement Plan (SIP) for Secondary School
Principals and School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) in Kogi State.
INTRODUCTION
In a bid to enhance accountability, transparency,
and governance in schools, the Kogi State Adolescent Girls Initiative for
Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project organized a capacity-building training
for the State Grievance Redress Committee (SGRC) across Kogi State’s three
senatorial districts. The training focused on equipping school principals and
SBMC members with practical skills in grievance redress mechanisms and the
development of school improvement plans.
OBJECTIVES
- Strengthen grievance
redress mechanisms (GRM) in schools.
- Establishment of the
Grievance Redress Committees across all the government owned secondary
schools of the State.
- Enhance the capacity of
School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) in effective school governance.
- Provide guidance on
community engagement, resource mobilization, and school supervision.
PARTICIPANTS
The training targeted principals of government-owned
secondary schools, and some SBMC members, including SBMC chairmen, treasurers,
and principals.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Honorable Commissioner
for Education, Wemi Jones attended and highlighted the state government’s
commitment to education governance.
- Expert facilitators,
including the National Project Implementing Unit (NPCU) GRM Lead Officer, Mr.
Emmanuel Erinmsprovided in-depth training on GRM.
- Resource persons from the
Ministry of Women Affairs, Mr. Mark Olufemi and Mr. Inah Isaac, led
sessions on gender-sensitive grievance redress and child protection.
- The consulting firm, Lead
123 Nigeria Limited, conducted training on SIP and community engagement.
- The Project Coordinator
delivered opening remarks and emphasized accountability and inclusion in
education management.
OUTCOMES
Participants gained:
- Knowledge on grievance
handling and complaint resolution.
- The establishment of
Grievance Redress Committees across all the government owned secondary
schools of the state.
- Skills in implementing
school improvement plans.
- Capacity for effective
communication and school management.
FEEDBACK
Participants expressed gratitude to Kogi AGILE and
the State Government, describing the training as timely and impactful.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- Continued support for GRM
and SIP implementation in schools.
- Regular monitoring and
evaluation of grievance redress processes.
CONCLUSION
The
capacity-building training marks a significant step forward in enhancing the
governance of secondary schools in Kogi State. It sets a benchmark for
proactive and inclusive education management, with a focus on accountability
and effective grievance redress mechanisms.
Event Itinerary Across
the 3 (Three) Senatorial Districts of Kogi State:
- Day 1 and 2 (GRM
Training): 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
- Day 3 and 4 (SBMC
Training): 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
- Breakout sessions,
interactive workshops, and practical demonstrations were included in each
day's schedule.
- Kogi Project AGILE was launched in phases: Starting from Kogi West Senatorial District, Central Senatorial District now happening in Kogi East
1) KABBA will commence on the 24th-25th February 2025
2) ISALU will commence on the 26th-27th of February 2025
3) LOKOJA will commence on the 28th of February and 1st of March 2025
4) OKENE will commence on the 3rd-4th of March 2025.
5) IDAH will commence on the 5th-6th of March 2025.
6) ANKPA will commence on the 7th-8th of March 2025
