On Wednesday, activists shared video footage showing Fayyadh, a commander in Hamas' Qassam Brigades, addressing a rally in northern Gaza. In the footage, Fayyadh declared, "Gaza has emerged unbreakable, victorious, and with its head held high," reaffirming the group's resilience.
According to reports from Anadolu Agency, the Israeli army had previously announced on May 23, 2024, that Fayyadh was killed during an operation targeting an underground complex in Jabalia, northern Gaza. Fayyadh was accused of coordinating rocket attacks on Israeli settlements and military positions during Israel's military campaign in Gaza. However, the army acknowledged on Wednesday that its intelligence regarding Fayyadh's death was inaccurate.
The rally comes amidst a fragile ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which began its initial six-week phase on January 19, 2025. The agreement temporarily halted Israel’s military offensive, which has resulted in over 47,200 Palestinian deaths mostly women and children and left more than 111,160 injured since the escalation began on October 7, 2023.
The three-phase ceasefire framework includes a prisoner exchange, efforts to maintain calm, and discussions on a permanent truce. It also outlines plans for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a move seen as crucial to de-escalating the conflict.
Israel’s military campaign has devastated Gaza, leaving over 11,000 people missing amidst widespread destruction. The humanitarian crisis in the enclave, described as one of the worst in modern history, has severely impacted vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and children.
