It will interest everyone to know that FUHSO, established in 2019 had its first Vice Chancellor (VC) in the person of Professor Innocent Ujah whose tenure would have ended on the 6th of November, 2024, when he must have attained the statutory retirement age of seventy (70).
It was a known and verified fact that the five years of Prof. Ujah in office as the VC of the institution was abruptly surrounded with misconduct, misappropriation of funds, maladministration, poor management strategy, managerial crisis, institution imbalance, lack of staffs relationships, personal handling of the institution with his ideas alone without general or public interest, non- compliance to the University guidelines or rules. The prevalence consequences of these obnoxious and inappropriate acts of the VC led to several negativities at the institution, including, poor learning environments due to the abandoned of constructive projects for years, failure of the institution to conduct the required 300L MBBS clinical examination which led to the unfortunate transfer of multitudes of medical students, failure of the University to provide examination materials for students, no formal staffs meeting within the five years tenure of Prof. Ujah, migration of lecturers to other institutions due to anger and disatisfaction and repeated strikes or unusual closing of the institution on several occasions etc.
Having resumed as the substantial PRO- Chancellor or Chairman of the Council, Engr Ohieku Muhammad Abdulsalam, as an experienced public servant whose commitment to development and persevered respect for public service is undoubtedly exceptional, choose to be inclusive and generous in the leadership of the institution. Apart from the verified mismanagement of the institution by Prof. Ujah, Engr Ohieku received several reports of ill- treatments of the institution from the Idoma Coalition For Development and Unity(ICDU) which he pended for thorough investigation.
The crisis started few days to the end of Prof. Ujah's tenure when he was issued a formal notice by the Council led by Engr Ohieku Muhammad Abdulsalam to present a statutory letter of retirement from public service in accordance and compliance with the public service rules, Council and University regulations. The VC confidently informed the Council team of his willingness for tenure elongation till May, 2025. The Council leadership rephrased and directed him to followed due process but he refused. The VC ( Prof. Ujah) arrogantly left the meeting unnoticed, later travelled out of the country without formal notification. He consistently kept off the Council's formal briefings despite his returned from the trip.
In order to stop and avoid future managerial crisis which has plagued the institution for years and return normalcy to the system, Engr Ohieku and his council members decided to act promptly, followed the Council's regulations, and the University rules to appoint Professor Ediga Agbo as the acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, which deservedly emerged from voting and collective nomination process. Engr Ohieku Muhammad Abdulsalam, in his wisdom, legality, transparency, commitment to public service and true advocacy for transformation, ensured that the former Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman was in clear picture of all antecedents before he was transferred from the ministry.
Professor Innocent Ujah immediately conspired with some of his loyal academic staffs in the institution, whom he misled, sponsored and funded to write a biased and fake report regarding the issues to the Ministry of Education with the aim of seeking for fair treatment. The permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Sani Gwarzo who was Prof. Ujah's former student as well his close friend in the ministry, Arc. Sunday Echono, Executive Secretary, TETFUND, were used to misled and misinformed the new Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who was an ignorant figure of the incidents. The Minister who should have called the entire team, especially the governing Council for investigation and first hearing couldn't do so but decided to acted as misled to present such unfair and biased report to the President, Commander in Chief Of the Armed Forces, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which he also treated without thorough investigation to relieved Engr Ohieku of his duty as the PRO- Chancellor/ Chairman Governing Council of FUHSO.
It is noted that the University Council led by Engr Ohieku Muhammad Abdulsalam has reached out to the Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa for formal presentation of the actual details which he promised to address appropriately. Additionally, the Idoma Coalition For Development and Unity (ICDU) had expressed their sympathy, disappointments and grievance delved from the unfair treatment of the ministry through an official letter received by Mr President, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on the 4th of December, 2024, for the clarity of issues, fair- treatment and the reinstatement of Engr Ohieku Muhammad Abdulsalam as the PRO- Chancellor/ Chairman governing Council of Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, FUHSO.
We would like to specifically emphasize that Engr Ohieku is a leader with good reputation and true advocacy for development and excellence. His absolute respect for rule of law is exceptional. As a result, he will not be a part of any form of outlaws and transgression. We expressed confidence and assurance that he will definitely overcome the corruption tending fighting back the entire process.
We are equally calling on all the supporters of the exemplary leader , Engr Ohieku Muhammad Abdulsalam to get the concise points of the issue, embracing calmness and waiting for the eventual resolution.
Thank you and God bless!
Signed!
