Fellow Nigerians, our high expectations for free and fair elections in Nigeria is no iota of doubt coming to pass. The new electoral acts that was thrown into our national dustbin waiting for bacteria harvest by the immediate past National Assembly had been retrieved and dusted by president Buhari. It has become a law and it will give us the kind of election we have been waiting for. The most important aspect of the electoral acts is the introduction of BVAS in the voting procss. The BVAS captures voters verification, accreditation and streamline the votes electronically to the collation center. This however cut the chain for the middlemen to hijack. Electronic device is used in developed countries. The electoral body deployed the technology in the last guber elections in Anambra, Osun and Ekiti. Those elections were litmus test for the operation of the technology.
The outcomes of the elections has brought new hope to Nigerians that their votes will count in the 2023 general elections. Though some sections of Nigeria have not seen anything good coming from the development. Their minds is still stagnantly fixated on seed in the crime of harvesting votes; it is totally internal reflection of pursing dreams. They have casted doubt in the ability of the device. They believe that the old order will be maintained and no need to be in euphoria about what is not seen on the horizon.
Unlike the previous elections when the election processes were manipulated and predetermined by unscrupulous politicians, the new electoral acts has drawn steal curtain on that. Therefore, it is going to be impossible for the parasitic politically landlord to manufacture votes. This has obviously proved to the people that the failed conduct of elections in Nigeria in the past can be redeemed.
Since the return of democracy to Nigeria in 1999, elections in the country had witnessed massive vote rigging with INEC announcing doctored results for candidate that procured the power of the incumbency of the state or federal. The 2003 elections represent true picture of distorted democracy Nigeria is practicing. That election was the climax of electoral manipulation and misconduct in the history of election Nigeria. Results were announced before the collation took place. This trend continued until tsunami of 2015 general elections when card readers were used.
This turnaround in the principles and practice will have positive impact in the process of entrenching political development and participation. It will go in long way to anchor the nation's democraticy in ideology base system which will lead to political development for good governance. It engenders good leadership through political wakefulness and consciousness of our best brains who are interested in joining politics.
The people is now left with the option of looking for aspirants that have demonstrated the ability and competence in the society.
While the new electoral technology plays it own role by cleaning augean stables in the election, the security has to play it own role professionally in line with the role of law. Buhari have to maintain his legacy of conducting free and fair election by making sure the security play their role during and after the election. The security in the previous elections compromise their positions by collecting bribe from politicians. Though Buhari must take the credit for implementing free and fair elections since he has been in the power.
To be continued.
